Fires Damages Church in Alamo

ALAMO — On July 14 a fire broke out in Cairo Baptist Church, Alamo, which may have completely destroyed the church’s main building. An educational building was not affected. The town is located about 15 miles northwest of Jackson.
There is no sign of criminal involvement and the cause is undetermined, reported Bob Dennison, pastor.

The church was insured for about $200,000 but that will not adequately cover all the damage, added Dennison.

At this time the congregation of about 65 people is meeting in the educational building.

“This has been difficult for a number of us,” said Dennison. “A building is just a building and a church is still a church but it has been hard.”

For instance, the pastor may have lost everything in his library which had been accumulated over 25 years.

However, already there have been a number of blessings from this, Dennison noted.
“The community support has been incredible.”

Funds have been sent by businesses and a sister Baptist church. A businessman has offered to draw new architectural plans for a new building at no cost.

Siding, windows, and doors have been pledged free of charge. Even the stained glass window artist who produced the seven windows in the former sanctuary called to say he will reproduce them.
Also area churches have offered meeting space, even saying they would adjust their current schedules to accommodate Cairo Baptist.

“The Lord’s taking care of it. There is a plan for this,” said Dennison.

“The best days are in front of us. We just need to continue being the church,” added Dennison.
