MANDRELL, LIFEWAY DESERVE KUDOS

For more than a decade I have observed as some, not all, presidents/CEOS of Southern Baptist Convention entities distance themselves from those “who foot the bill” — Southern Baptists in the pew.  Some leaders have been curt (a polite way of saying “rude”) to messengers who have dared asked tough questions from the floor of the SBC annual meetings.  Lifeway Christian Resources took a great deal of criticism last week

THE B&R — COMMITTED TO TELLING YOUR STORIES

Tennessee Baptists will have an opportunity to celebrate the 188-year history of their Baptist newspaper on Sunday, Aug. 20, which is recognized as B&R Day on the Tennessee Baptist Convention calendar.  Every issue of the Baptist and Reflector shares stories of how Tennessee Baptists are impacting spiritual lostness and advancing God’s Kingdom.  As an editorial staff, we are doing what Tennessee Baptists have indicated they wanted. We are telling your

SOON OUR FAMILY WILL GATHER!

To highlight its annual picnic, a company rented two racing row boats and challenged a rival company to a race. To the consternation of the company who rented the racing row boats, the rival company quickly went into the lead and won the boat race with very little effort.  The company who lost immediately formed a task force the next Monday morning to discern why they had lost the race

COPOUTS DON’T HELP COLLEGE STUDENTS

The world today seems to be increasingly messed up. When it comes to younger generations, it is easy sometimes to give up or just give in to apathy or complacency. As Baptists we are really not doing them any favors and actually may be doing great damage to both their future and our own students. Here are four things that we tell ourselves that really are not helpful. We could

GENEROSITY: SIX WAYS TO KICK IT UP A NOTCH!

I must confess that I am a terrible online shopper. I find something that looks like a quality product only to realize later that it wasn’t, or that it didn’t work, or that I should have read more reviews.  I call it “click regret.” It’s that dreadful moment when I realize that the cloak of buyer remorse has fallen over my bank account like a sad blanket. Why did I

PASSAGE OF TIME CHANGES PERSPECTIVE

Most all of my mother’s side of the family grew up in Graham County, N.C., near the small town of Robbinsville. Today, Robbinsville is a tourist attraction noted for the beauty of its mountains and outdoor life and its proximity to the Cherohala Skyway, a scenic mountain highway, and the Tail of the Dragon, an 11-mile stretch of road from Tennessee into Graham County used by motorcycles and sports cars.

ONE MESSENGER’S PERSPECTIVE OF SBC 2023

It’s always a great day to be a Tennessee Baptist, but there were many moments during the recent Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting when I was also proud to be a Southern Baptist.  Here’s a sampling of some of those moments:

ARE WE FOCUSED ON THE RIGHT THING?

Southern Baptists are once again in the national news. Here are a sampling of headlines from across the nation last week: “Southern Baptists take first step in approving ban on women pastors” — The Tennessean “Southern Baptists move to purge churches with female pastors” — The New York Times “Southern Baptists vote to expel two churches led by female pastors” — NBC News And the list continues to grow. Sadly,

TO ALL THE FATHERS PLUGGING AWAY

Father’s Day is not like Mother’s Day and not always in the best way.  I was sitting behind a dad and his son during church on Father’s Day several years ago. The son was probably about 11 or 12 years old. The sermon majored on how fathers “need to pick it up,” supported by a healthy dose of dead-beat-dad statistics. It was a depressing sermon and as I looked around

GODLY FATHERS TEACH COMPASSION, FAITH

Being the kind of father that brings glory to God requires time and patience. It is often through every day experiences and activities that children learn trust, compassion and faith. And by working with their dads, they learn skills for living. My father built the home I grew up in through hard, physical labor. He tore down two smaller houses and even removed the nails, to construct our dwelling. A
