IT’S TRUE WHAT THE SONG SAYS: ‘CRAZY PEOPLE’ FOLLOW JESUS

Casting Crowns, one of my favorite singing groups, has a song with this title, “Crazy People.” The song mentions several people in Scripture that did some crazy things for Jesus.  First, there was Noah who built an ark when there was not a cloud in the sky. Then there was David who picked a fight, as a boy, with a giant. Daniel turned a lion’s den into a petting zoo.

GENERATION NEXT IS GENERATION NOW

I remember hearing the late Michael Catt, long-time pastor of Sherwood Baptist in Albany, Ga., say many times, “Whoever wants the next generation the most will get them.” That quote has resonated with me for years and especially now. Who comes to mind when you hear or think, “next generation?” Maybe it’s one of the named generations — Gen X, Y, Z, Alpha, and so on. Maybe you think about

BEACH REACH FUELS STUDENT EVANGELISM

In recent years, campus ministers at Baptist Campus Ministries across Tennessee have placed greater emphasis on participating in Beach Reach over the spring break holiday. Beach Reach is a unique ministry in Panama City Beach, Fla., that utilizes simple acts of kindness to share the gospel with thousands of spring breakers.  As Ashlyn Trice, BCM associate campus minister at the University of Memphis, shared, “Beach Reach provides students with the

ONLY JESUS DESERVES THE ‘G.O.A.T.’ TITLE

I remember “the good ole days” when a goat was simply that — an animal, one of God’s creations. I can recall the first time I heard a human referred to as a goat. It occurred during a sports talk show on the radio. I actually thought that the person who called someone a goat was going to get in serious trouble for disrespecting another human being. I finally realized

TRANSITIONS AHEAD FOR THE TBC

“Change” is an interesting word. A quick check of a dictionary app offers more than 10 definitions and all of those except two deal with some aspect of transition or transformation.  A few definitions that stand out are: “to make different;” “to make a shift from one to another;” and “to give a different position, course or direction to.” Tennessee Baptists are changing. We are shifting from the Five Objectives

The Tennessee Baptist Mission Board will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year with a series of livestream events, beginning in May. The celebration will culminate in November at The Summit in Murfreesboro, where

11 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE ASKING

We are eight months from the U.S. presidential election and some Christians are already torching their gospel witness.  The embers of contempt have smoldered for years but following President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address March 7, virtual wildfires fueled by the combustible mix of politics, social media and religion are spreading. Sadly, many Christians are guilty of self-inflicted, reputational arson sparked by their social media postings, and their

MAKING EASTER AN EVERYDAY EVENT

In terms of the calendar, Easter is coming early this year.  Last spring, we celebrated Easter on April 9, and the previous year, it was April 17.  For those who might be interested (perhaps there are a few other calender nerds like myself out there), it’s actually been eight years since we last celebrated the resurrection in March — as we are doing this year — and it’s only happened

DOOLEY NOTED: A WORLD WITHOUT EASTER

This weekend, Christians all over the world will observe Easter festivities to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I am grateful for these celebrations even as I am reminded that apart from the physical, bodily resurrection of our Lord, Christianity would be nothing more than a nostalgic myth. Dr. Billy Graham once told TIME magazine, “If I were an enemy of Christianity, I would aim right at the resurrection, because

THE ONE THING REMAINS THE MAIN THING

D.L. Moody once said, “Give me a man who says this one thing I do, and not those fifty things I dabble in.”  I like that. A lot. I want to be a doer. I don’t want to be a dabbler.  In their book, The One Thing, Gary Keller and Jay Papasan wrote, “Once you have figured out what matters, keep asking what matters most until there is only one
