SBC ANNUAL MEETINGS ARE FOR THE MESSENGERS

One good thing about not having a printed issue immediately following the SBC annual meeting is I have an opportunity to think about all that transpired during those two packed days in Indianapolis. I won’t rehash the business itself. We have numerous articles on the website from the annual meeting as well as a good wrap up of events from the SBC, some of which have not been on the

REFLECTIONS OF SBC 2024

Southern Baptist Convention annual meetings are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you might find.  I know that is paraphrased wisdom imparted by Forrest Gump’s momma, but it certainly applies, and it certainly applies to the people who attend. So many friends and faces from across the years, you never know who you may run into that offers a warm remembrance.  For instance, a lady in her

WILL YOU BE REMEMBERED IN THREE YEARS?

Recently I heard someone say that in three years no one will remember you. I am going through a season of change right now, and that struck me as quite depressing. I am the wife of a pastor, and we have been in ministry for nearly 30 years.  I am a teacher, and it just dawned on me that I have been teaching more than half of my life. This

WHAT GREATNESS TRULY LOOKS LIKE

Many, many years ago, when I was just a boy, my family took a vacation to California. One night while there, we were eating at a restaurant when we looked across the room and spotted — you won’t believe this — Muhammed Ali!  The three-time heavyweight champion was eating a quiet dinner with his own family, tucked away in a corner table.  Realizing the magnitude of this moment, my friend

DOOLEY NOTED: SHOULD WE PRIORITIZE CHURCH ATTENDANCE?

Why do you go to church? It was an honest question from an unbeliever I’d known for years. Our recent discussion about following Christ turned to more pragmatic matters born out of his general observations about Christianity in general.  “Why would I give up my one day off in order to gather with bunch of people I don’t know?” was his follow-up. Perhaps you’ve wondered the same. Do we really

DEAR 2024 GRADUATES: WORK HARD

’ Tis the season for graduation addresses, and as a college professor for many years I’d like to share some thoughts with you (and others who might want to listen in). Our culture encourages you to laziness, and then, mocks and caricatures you as lazy. The truth is if you want a meaningful, worthwhile life, you must work hard.  It is odd to me to hear the word lazy used

A SPECIAL OFFERING FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE

My mother’s first cousin was an adult with exceptional needs. He unfortunately died several years ago. His name was Doug.  Doug lived with his mom and dad, had several siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins who deeply cared about him and for him. His parents were his primary caretakers until he passed away. Family members pitched in financially along the way to ensure his physical, emotional and financial needs were met

HOW I’M PRAYING FOR THE SBC

In just a few days, thousands of Southern Baptists will journey to Indianapolis for our annual meeting. Every year, it feels like the SBC is a big pressure cooker on the stove building steam throughout the year until we hit the release valve at the annual meeting each June.  There are multiple issues of significance that have certainly led to quite a bit of pressure being built through social media

SAME SBC — 41 YEARS LATER

I attended my first annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Pittsburgh in 1983. The “Conservative Resurgence” was in its infancy. The conflict between “moderates/liberals” and “conservatives” remained throughout the 1980s and most of the 1990s.  Many moderates left the SBC in 1991 and formed the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. One of their parting shots at the SBC was that now that moderates were gone, the conservatives would “turn on
