BRENTWOOD — Doctors, dietitians, nurses, community health workers and more bustled around Brentwood Baptist Church for MedAdvance 2023, a Southern Baptist International Mission Board conference held Aug. 3-5 for believers interested in using healthcare strategies to open doors to a hurting world and gain access to unreached peoples and places in unique ways. Approximately 300 attendees, including 60 percent who are students, were given opportunities to connect with IMB missionaries

HELP US TELL THE STORIES OF TENNESSEE BAPTISTS

Since 1835, Tennessee Baptists have had a newspaper. We had a newspaper even before we had a convention. That’s how important some of the early Baptists in Tennessee felt about having a source for news. My hope and desire is that we still have people 188 years later who see the need for a resource such as the Baptist and Reflector. Sunday, Aug. 20, is Baptist and Reflector Day on

VBS IS A MINISTRY, NOT JUST AN EVENT

FRANKLIN — By now, most churches across the state have taken down the decorations and packed up the cardboard and scissors.  Another year of Vacation Bible School is in the books. But what many people don’t realize is that VBS is actually a year-round ministry, not a week-long event. The planning process is perpetually taking place — and more importantly, the impact of VBS, in many cases, lasts a lifetime.

MCRANEY SUIT AGAINST NAMB DISMISSED BY U.S. DISTRICT COURT

Editor’s Note: The Baptist Paper broke this story and published it on their website. The (Will) McRaney v. North American Mission Board lawsuit, initially filed in 2017, was dismissed Aug. 15 by the U.S. District Court Northern District of Mississippi Aberdeen Division. “Adjudication of the Plaintiff’s claims in this lawsuit will clearly require the Court to inquire into religious matters and decision-making to a degree that is simply impermissible under

CHURCH PROVIDES MINISTRY FOR SOULS AND SOLES

KNOXVILLE — North Knoxville Baptist Church, once a thriving congregation in Knox County, has fallen on hard times in recent years with an average of 40 to 60 people on any given Sunday. But under the leadership of an interim pastor (actually two interims), the church is beginning to bounce back. A key part of the revitalization has been the willingness of the older congregation to reach out to its

DOOLEY NOTED: REASONS TO TRUST GOD

Editor’s note: Plans are for “Dooley Noted” to become a regular column on the website at baptistandreflector.org. Columns also will be published in the print issue as space is available. Do you trust me? That was the question I heard from one of my sons as he, through a sly grin, begged me to sit down. Because he was unaware that I saw him slip the Whoopi Cushion beneath me,

FEAR PREVALENT IN PEWS, ACCORDING TO PROTESTANT PASTORS

BRENTWOOD —“Fear not” is a frequent command in the Bible, but most pastors feel churchgoers aren’t getting the message. A Lifeway Research study finds almost 7 in 10 U.S. Protestant pastors (69 percent) believe there is a growing sense of fear within their congregations about the future of the nation and world. Additionally, more than 3 in 5 (63 percent) say their churches have a similar increasing dread specifically about

WHEN A CHURCH MEMBER DIES ON A MISSION TRIP

Our church sends mission teams to Ridgecrest Conference Center every year to serve students attending Fuge Camps. It’s a wonderful service opportunity, and one I recommend churches consider. Our mission teams perform a variety of tasks such as doing laundry, working in the kitchen, serving in the coffee shop, cleaning the cafeteria; you know, all the mundane tasks Jesus would do.  This year’s trip in June began like all the
