Poignantly encouraged more workers to be sent

  • Appointed as a missionary to China in 1872.
  • Wrote impassioned letters describing the realities of mission work and the desperate need for more workers.

Expanded Work (1885-1894)

  • Encouraged Southern Baptist Women to organize mission societies in local churches, which led to the formation of Woman’s Missionary Union.
  • Advocated for the first international missions offering in 1888, which raised enough money to send three new missionaries to China.

Famine & Scarcity (1894-1912)

  • Experienced firsthand the realities of mission work in a poverty-stricken, war-torn and starving country and gave of herself and her limited resources sacrificially.
  • Served in the Shandong Province for 39 years. Died en route to the U.S. on Christmas Eve, 1912.
  • WMU named the annual missions offering after Lottie in 1919 to honor her passion and dedication to overseas missions and to inspire future generations.
